Keeping in mind the challenges our non-traditional student population faces, some pressures may become overwhelming and unmanageable for our students, which may lead to concerning communication and/or challenging behavior.

Faculty have several avenues of support for navigating communication challenges or difficult situations.

First, always look for a positive resolution and work towards building trust with a student. Understanding what the root of the issue is or what a student may be facing outside of the classroom can help you consider the best way to support the student.

Second, confer with your Faculty Classroom Consultant regarding the issue. Remember, each student's circumstances and situation are unique. From there, you collaborate to determine ways to redirect the student. Student advisors can also collaborate with faculty on student communication and support.

Third, refer the student to Student Conduct if your documented interventions are unsuccessful and the behavior is persistent despite your efforts and collaboration with the student's advisor.

The Student Support Resources Guide is a valuable tool that supports challenging classroom situations. This guide includes information about various support departments at UAGC, along with scenarios and helpful language to assist you in navigating challenging situations with your students.

Below are more resources from the Office of Student Conduct, which is available for consultation if needed at scs@uagc.edu.
